I am clearly not a consistent blogger and I do apologize. I so admire those who can both live and write simultaneously!
This December 10, 2013 was the 10th anniversary of Rob's Nobel Prize award. We did not go back to Stockholm for the amazing events this year but we did return in 2011 to celebrate with Tom Sargent and Chris Sims. The events were still glittering and the Royal Family as gracious. As Bobby Solow once said, those Swedes know how to put on a celebration.
We are still awed by the decision that Alfred Nobel made to honor the work of the mind. There are few other ways that academics can be valued like rock stars and it is an important statement of values.
Rob is constantly asked how the award has changed his life. The last words of the miraculous phone call to inform Rob of his award were "Your life will never be the same." And it is true. In the best of ways. Aside from the assurance that one's life's work does matter and has impact, the Prize has affected Rob's world views and his research. He has wanted to find ways to make his research relevant to current economic questions for both researchers and policy makers. The Volatility Institute and its VLAB website have been new and exciting ventures.
We have travelled to every continent and met many wonderful people many of whom are trying to make lives better in their own countries. This year alone we have been to China, Japan, Australia, Singapore, Argentina, Chile, England, France, Italy...Last year it was Moscow, Istanbul, Germany, Taiwan, Brazil, etc. etc. Each trip is special and our world view is constantly enriched.
On a family level, our daughter, Lindsey and husband Justin Richland now have 3 adorable boys. Lindsey and Justin are tenured professors at the University of Chicago. Our son Jordan is having good success with his modeling and commercial career. His Lexus ad last year was shown constantly for months and we had the thrill of seeing him on the back of every Playbill last Holiday season. He has started a very successful photography company called OGPICS. We are still waiting for some risk taking film director to see that the leading man is still waiting in the wings.
Rob and I are both working hard and playing hard as we always have. Life is good and we are grateful.
